What is an Atom? the smallest unit of mass.
What are the particles that make up an atom, list their mass and charge?
Name Approximate Relative Mass Relative Charge
Proton p +1
Neutron n 0
Electron e -1
What is the size of an atom?
Measures very small around 0.1 nanometer, or 100 picometers
What is the shape of an atom, where are the particles?
The shape of an atom is imaginary volume determined by electron clouds most likely representing that of a sphere. The shape is determined by angular momentum of electrons and electrostatic forces between atomic particles; however, not all atoms are in a sphere-like form, heavier atoms such as iron and carbon are not spherical.
Where are the particles located?
The protons and neutrons are what is made up of the nucleus, the electrons orbit outside of the nucleus.

What are the characteristics of electrons?
- Has a negative charge
- Has a much smaller mass than Proton and Neutron
- Orbits outside of the nucleus
- Move from negatively charged parts to positively charged ones < bond
- Waves (electrons are like light around the nucleus)
- Our world is defined by electrons!
